On Monday Councillor David Brake (Walderslade), Portfolio Holder for Adult Services and Public Health, was delighted to take part in the Local Government Association's COVID-19 impact on obesity webinar.
This national event saw hundreds tune in, with Councillor Brake able to share with the forum the positive action Medway has taken to ensure that there has been no letup in the fight against obesity during the pandemic period.
As has been recognised only this week by national Government, obesity is strongly correlated to COVID 19, with higher death rates reported from overweight or obese individuals. Whilst Medway Council's annual Healthy Weight Summit has sadly had to be postponed, we have ensured that we can continue our delivery and championing role through the Health and Wellbeing Board and other strategic groups. We have been proud to keep encouraging all Medway partners to use the recovery phase of the pandemic to prioritise obesity, prevention and health inequalities moving forwards.
