Last evening Councillor Turpin, Deputy Leader of the Opposition, and Councillor Perfect, Opposition Spokesperson for Children, Young People and Education, attended the “Time to Shine Awards” for children in care and care experienced young adults. It was inspiring to see the vast numbers of young people in Medway who grew up in care making a strong and positive difference to their local communities. There were many awards up for grabs such as The Young Volunteer Award, The Young Leader Award, and countless others.
The event was made possible with the support of Medway Council, the Young Lives Foundation, Gillingham Football Club, a range of corporate and third sector sponsors, and by generous contributions from ward funds by Councillors.
Speaking after the event Councillor Perfect, commented
“It was amazing to see so many young people awarded for their hard work and determination. We have some very talented young people across Medway, and it was an honour to see their talent and determination rewarded.”
Leader of the Opposition, Councillor Gulvin said
“Children in care start life at a disadvantage and often have unique challenges from a young age. Every young person at the awards ceremony, and all 159 nominees have demonstrated outstanding individual achievement. I would like to thank so many of the corporate sponsors for making the event possible. Children matter in Medway."
