The 27th January 2025 marked the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz Birkenau.
Leader of the Opposition Councillor Perfect along with Councillors Anang, Etheridge, Spring and Tejan, attended a service of remembrance at Cliffe Woods School to mark Holocaust Memorial Day and the six million Jewish victims and the millions of others who suffered Nazi persecution in Europe between 1933-1945. Since 2004, Medway Holocaust Memorial Day commemoration has been organised between the Council, Cathedral, Synagogue, Youth Council and Inter Faith Action Forum.
Councillors found it particularly moving to hear testimonies from some of Medway’s young people and that the lessons of the Holocaust are continuing to resonate with young people.
Councillor George Perfect, Leader of the Opposition, said:
“Tuesday's service was a poignant and important moment for Medway to come together and reflect on the 80th Anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, and this years theme of Holocaust Memorial Day - For a better future.
This year's event demonstrated this year's theme well with children and young people at the heart of the service, and important lessons for all."
