Medway Conservatives Providing Additional Facilities for Children with Special Educational Needs
Medway Council’s Conservative Cabinet today gave the go ahead for the development of a capital programme to utilise £1.377 million of government funding to expand SEN provision in Medway.
The funding will allow for new places of provision as well as improvement or expansion of facilities, reflecting the strong desire of the Conservative-led Cabinet to increase and improve delivery for its most vulnerable children. Whilst complementing already very successful projects currently in place at Abbey Court and Danecourt Special Schools, additional places will enable children and young people with SEN to be educated far closer to their home, families, and friends rather than being placed out of area.
Councillor Andrew Mackness, Portfolio Holder for Children’s Services, said:
‘I am absolutely delighted to be moving ahead with the development of a capital programme of this magnitude. Amidst growing demand for SEN places, Medway Council is continuing to provide opportunities for children and young people to develop resilience and independence through provision of excellent quality facilities.
The Government’s funding initiative will allow us to deliver further inclusive and positive outcomes for children and their families, ensuring that suitable environments exist locally to meet the individual needs of Medway’s children. It shall also work in conjunction with Medway’s alternative and special education provision, and I very much look forward to welcoming the programme following the period of consultation.’
