Medway Conservative Group are appalled that Medway Labour continue to threaten the existence of the Medway Tunnel, with their 2019 manifesto showing that a Labour-run Council would cease to fund repairs to the tunnel. This would see an essential part of Medway’s infrastructure fall into total disrepair.
This is not the first time Medway Labour have failed to recognise the crucial importance the Medway Tunnel plays for the over 50,000 drivers who rely on the tunnel every single day. Medway Conservatives have previously highlighted the intensely worrying comments of Labour Councillor Tristan Osbourne, who last year let slip at a Council meeting his party’s opposition to continued funding of the tunnel. Whilst Medway Labour have branded the purchase of the Tunnel by Medway Council ‘foolish’, Medway Conservatives have continued to protect and maintain this vital link to the Hoo Peninsula, which would otherwise have faced closure - which would bring about countless negative impacts for residents, commuters, and the emergency services.
Councillor Alan Jarrett, Leader of the Conservative Group, said:
“It is unthinkable that Labour would actively consign this lifeline of Medway to closure. The Conservative Group will continue to protect the best interests of residents and safeguard them from this outright dangerous Labour campaign.”
