MEDWAY CONSERVATIVES PRESS RELEASE 23/02/18
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Medway Conservatives were left in utter disbelief following the callous and cowardly performance of the Medway Labour Group at last night’s Council meeting. Throughout the course of the evening Labour Councillors made shallow and baseless attempts to tear down the Conservative administration’s balanced budget, which will bring further investment, ambition and innovation to Medway, and pledges millions to deliver services to help the most vulnerable members of our communities.
The Labour Group again failed to produce any alternative budgetary proposals, yet happily proceeded to unanimously oppose the entire Capital Programme via recorded vote. In doing so, every single Labour Councillor voted against proposals tabled by Councillor Alan Jarrett, Leader of Medway Council and the Conservative Group, to allocate £47,000 to projects honouring Medway’s military heritage and Armed Forces.
Councillor Alan Jarrett, Leader of Medway Council and the Conservative Group said:
‘As if the rejection of £42,000 to Freedom of the Boroughs for both C Company and HMS Medway were not enough of a disgrace, last night Labour also voted against the allocation of £5,000 to commemorate the service of local war hero Major James Thomas Byford McCudden VC.
In the previous meeting of Medway Council on the 25th of January, I was proud to say members from across all parties were happy to support a motion to ‘mark the service of James McCudden in the centenary year of his death by a permanent memorial in an appropriate form to be decided subsequent to this meeting’. To now renege on this promise, Medway Labour have shown themselves to be truly incapable of either honouring promises, or putting words into action. They have let themselves down, but more worryingly they have let the people of Medway down.’
