Yesterday, members of the GMB Southern Union protested at the gates of Strood Academy. They chose to do so irrespective of the fact that this week marked the first week of the summer exam season, and with the resulting disruption causing maximum distress and distraction for hardworking students at a time when they should be made to feel fully supported in order to reach their potential.
Councillor Martin Potter, Portfolio Holder for Education and Schools, said:
"I was totally appalled at the protest incident that took place at Strood Academy which was organised by GMB (supported by NEU and Unison members), and supported by the Labour opposition in Medway.
I understand they are concerned about staffing at a different academy (not in Medway), and that is fair and legitimate but there is a time and place, and often a better means, for resolving these matters. In Medway we have worked hard to ensure the needs of our children and young people come first, and this has been a key component of raising education standards. Therefore, I am confident that regardless of their view on the subject matter, colleagues from across Medway will join me in condemning this ill judged protest.
I shall be writing to the NEU and Unison, and the Leigh Academies Trust in order to hopefully avoid further such incidents in the future."
