This year, Councillor David Wildey and Councillor Alan Jarrett donated money from their Ward Improvement Funds to purchase new equipment for the Lordswood and Walderslade Community Litter Group. The new equipment presented to the Group yesterday (14/02/2022) was 10 adult sized litter pickers, 10 child sized litter pickers, 10 hi visibility vests and 10 bag hoops.
The Group has gone from strength to strength and started in March 2021 after Mary McAllister, who went on a Council organised litter pick more than 2 years ago, wanted to make a difference in her local community. It started as walking as part of her daily exercise and picking up litter while she was walking. She then went on to create the Lordswood and Walderslade Community Litter Group on Facebook and she said the enthusiasm has been tremendous when she spoke in Medway Matters. In fact, the Group have now collected over 2000 bags of litter in 11 months, which is amazing and no mean feat, not to mention the positive impact this has on our wider environment.
Councillor Jarrett said “it’s always good to support local residents such as this group, especially as it complements our climate change agenda by getting plastics and rubbish disposed of correctly.”
Councillor Wildey added that “the outstanding message is to ask people to stop dropping litter or use the bins provided, so we can have a clean and beautiful environment to live in.”
