Labour Mayor, Sadiq Khan has put forward proposals recently to eradicate the London travelcard, which offers a more affordable way of travelling around London and can be used on trains, buses and tubes.
We have seen Kent County Council putting their head above the parapet to oppose the plans, along with Surrey and other Council’s surrounding London, highlighting the significant impact it will have on their residents as these areas have the highest volume of London commuters. Many residents commute from Medway for work and will be dependent on this cost effective method of travel. Especially during a cost of living crisis, it is not fair to ask commuters, or even leisure travellers, to pay more than they do already. Household bills and train fares are already sky high and this is totally unacceptable.
Medway Conservatives Leader, Cllr Adrian Gulvin said “it feels as though there’s a culture of penalising people for working away from home, whether that be in London or elsewhere or for wanting to travel beyond their immediate area. Unions are already holding us all to ransom with all the strikes and now we will have to pay a hefty price for the privilege of an interrupted service should the travelcards be eradicated. I really hope the Labour Group join me in expressing my dismay and disappointment at the proposals.”
We are calling on the Labour Group and Cllr Maple to support us with this and write to the Mayor strongly opposing these plans. People who are travelling to London for work or otherwise, should not be penalised for it.
